چکیده

A large model can be split into smaller components where by assembly features can be created and attached onto the components so that they can be reassembled to form the original model. The assembly features may function as positioning or interlocking purposes depending on the mating requirement. This paper describes a method for creating assembly features onto the solid components automatically. The main idea of the method is to construct spatial rectangular assembly cells inside the original model. This is done by ray tracing the tool surface that is used to split the model, provided that there is no undercut on the split surface along the assembly direction. The spatial cells represent solid regions in which assembly features can be attached. Different kinds of assembly features can be mapped to the spatial cells, which are then attached to the split components. The split surface can be planar, quadrics or higher order freeform surfaces, thus allowing a high degree of flexibility in creating the assembly feature shapes. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Planning for assembly from solid models

This paper describes how to use geometric boundary models of assembly components to find mating features, thereby permitting simpler task specifications to be used. This forms part of our work on a high-level robot assembly task planner. To mitigate the combinatorics of searching for a feasible correspondence between features of different bodies, boundary models produced by PADLS are matched ag...

Basic LOgical Bulk Shapes (BLOBs) for Finite Element Hexahedral Mesh Generation

This article presents an approach for automatically generating hexahedral meshes from solid models. The mesh generating method presented in this paper involves four major steps. First, objects called Basic LOgical Bulk shapes (BLOBs) are determined from the solid model of a given part. Second, these BLOBs are used to decompose the solid model into its various sub-volumes. Third, a multiple-bloc...

A single solution method for converting 2D assembly drawings to 3D part drawings

Although solid models play a central role in modern CAD systems, 2D CAD systems are still commonly used for designing products without complex curved faces. Therefore, an important task is to convert 2D drawings to solid models, and this is usually carried out manually even in present CAD systems. Many methods have been proposed to automatically convert orthographic part drawings of solid objec...

Symmetry Groups in Analysis of Assembly Kinematics*

This paper describes the use of symmetry groups in the analysis of kinematic aspects of assembly. The goal is to find how to assemble a product from a characterisation of its final assembly configuration. From such closed, and irreducible algebraic surface of R3. The essential observations leading to our work are 0 The areal contacts which are the most common form of feature relationship betwee...

Conformal Assembly Meshing with Tolerant Imprinting

Solid assembly meshing has all of the same “dirty geometry” induced issues as single part meshing but also has the difficulty associated with generating a conformal mesh between solids where solid-solid interfaces are not obvious. Mesh generators usually don’t have CAD assembly constraint information to identify interfacing solids and must therefore rely on geometric proximity to deduce these i...
